There are many thousands of people who over the centuries have cared for nature but a few stand out and represent the best in conservation.
David Attenborough 1926-
One of the pioneers of the nature documentary, he has written and presented eight major series (with a ninth in production) surveying nearly every aspect of life on Earth. In his latest documentary he finished with the following "The future of life on earth depends on our ability to take action. Many individuals are doing what they can, but real success can only come if there's a change in our societies and our economics and in our politics. I've been lucky in my lifetime to see some of the greatest spectacles that the natural world has to offer. Surely we have a responsibility to leave for future generations a planet that is healthy, inhabitable by all species."
Jacques Cousteau 1910-1997
After training as a French Naval Officer and taking part in WW2, Jacques Cousteau turned his attention to minesweeping techniques and shipwreck exploration. He then started making films about marine life and went on to win 3 Oscars for his documentaries and also the UN environmental prize in 1977 for his work. The Jacques Cousteau Society was created to promote marine conservation and continues to this day.
Charles Darwin 1809-1892
